Egypt & Japan Partner on EGP 1.4 Billion Blood Bag Factory in SCZone

Egypt and Japan have signed a EGP 1.4 billion agreement to establish a blood bag manufacturing facility in Ain Sokhna’s Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone). The project, backed by President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and witnessed by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, involves Egypt’s Medical Investments Company (ECMI), Interpharm Egypt, and Japan’s JMS.

The factory aims to produce seven million blood pouches annually by its seventh year, covering 100% of Egypt’s domestic needs (three million units) and exporting four million to Middle Eastern and North African markets. Strategically located in SCZone, the facility will leverage tax incentives and logistics advantages to position Egypt as a regional medical manufacturing hub.

The project will aid in advancing medical self-sufficiency, attracting foreign investment, and strengthening public-private partnerships. The initiative will ease the localisation of pharmaceutical production amid rising global demand for blood products in surgeries, transplants, and chronic disease treatment.

The factory is projected to enhance Egypt’s medical exports and foreign currency reserves, with operations set to begin in 2025.
