Rappers appearing in Egyptian advertisements has become commonplace, but that hasn’t always been the case. While these rappers are now familiar faces that appeal to consumers and drive corporate campaigns, back in the day they were just youngsters making music far removed from the mainstream. Advertisements played a pivotal role in shaping the Egyptian rap scene that we know today, on many levels.

Following the hip-hop boom in the late part of the 2010s, companies saw a great opportunity in these rappers, deciding to partner with them to appeal to younger audiences. It was a win-win kind of deal. While obviously the money factor was huge for these rappers, what the advertisers did for rap in Egypt was greater than that. Advertisements helped legitimize hip-hop as a voice for the youth, propelling these aspiring talents to be familiar faces whether on small screens or huge billboards across the country.

Now, rappers flex being in ads and throw in corporate names in their verses. It’s weird when you think about it, isn’t it. One day you wake up and suddenly Marwan Moussa is talking about how he is in a telecom company’s ad while shaming his nemesis - Abo El Anwar at the time - for being featured in an underwear campaign. Wild stuff.
