Ministry of Transport Trains BRT Drivers Ahead of Ring Road Launch

The Ministry of Transport has officially launched a driver training programme for Egypt’s first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, marking a major step toward transforming public transportation along Greater Cairo’s Ring Road. Ten buses are currently undergoing test runs to simulate full-service conditions, including stop timings, passenger boarding procedures, and station coordination.

According to a statement from the ministry, this pilot marks the first phase of a broader BRT initiative that will extend over 110 kilometres, replacing the fleet of microbuses currently operating along the Ring Road. The BRT system is designed to provide a faster, more efficient alternative, complete with designated lanes, modern infrastructure, and high-capacity vehicles to accommodate the needs of Cairo’s growing population.

The BRT rollout will take place in three phases, eventually connecting major transit hubs across the capital. The project is part of the government’s wider efforts to develop integrated, multimodal transport networks and reduce urban congestion.
