Abu Dhabi’s First Butterfly Sanctuary to Spread Its Wings in September
The Butterfly Gardens at Al Qana will house over 10,000 butterflies, alongside sloths and koi carp, in climate-controlled domes.

Abu Dhabi will soon be home to its first dedicated butterfly sanctuary, with the Butterfly Gardens at Al Qana set to open in September 2025. Located beside The National Aquarium, the new destination will bring together biodiversity, education, and immersive design across two climate-controlled bio-domes.
The sanctuary is expected to house more than 10,000 butterflies, alongside species not typically associated with the desert: two-toed sloths, bearcats, koi carp, and tropical insects. Visitors will explore two themed ecosystems—one inspired by the Americas, featuring caiman crocodiles and rainforest flora, and another by Asia, where bearcats and koi ponds offer a more tranquil setting.
Unveiled at Arabian Travel Market 2025, the project reflects growing interest in family-focused, ecologically themed spaces across the UAE. While it offers interactive exhibits and visual spectacle, the Butterfly Gardens also emphasise environmental awareness and the importance of species conservation.
